Interpretation Exam Audio Technology Requirements

To apply to the Spanish/English Interpretation program, applicants must complete an online background information form and a short online exam. The exam tests applicants' verbal proficiency in English and Spanish.

How the Spanish/English Interpretation Exam Works

After you complete the online background information form, you will be redirected to the online Interpretation exam.

You will answer one exam question in English and one in Spanish. For each question, you will:

  1. listen to a recorded question
  2. record your answer to that question as an audio file
  3. save the audio file to your computer or other device
  4. upload the saved audio file from your device into the exam

Technology Requirements

You will need the following technology for the exam:

  • Speakers/headphones to listen to the exam questions
  • The ability to record, save and upload audio files

Recording Audio Files

You may use a free recording program, such as Audacity (https://www.audacityteam.org/download/ ) to record your answers, or any other audio recording program you are familiar with. You may also be able to use an app (such as Voice Memo or Recorder) on your mobile device.

Your recorded answers must be saved in one of the following audio file formats:

  • MP3
  • M4A
  • OGG
  • WAV

Practicing Before the Exam

The exam is timed, so you will need to record, save and upload your audio files before the exam ends.

Therefore, if you are not familiar with recording and saving audio files, we strongly recommend that you practice using your audio recording program before you start the Interpretation exam. That way, you can focus on the exam, rather than focusing on the audio recording technology.
