This innovative fourteen-week online program is designed to equip professionals with an understanding of the science behind international challenges and practical skills in negotiation, strategic communication, critical thinking, and policy analysis.

These competencies empower professionals to build partnerships, influence decision-making processes, and drive impactful solutions in diverse global contexts and will fast-track successful participants to assume leading roles in organizations such as UNESCO, CERN, WHO, ITU and IAEA.

  • Format: The program is fully online and includes both synchronous and asynchronous components. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from guest lecturers, including university professors, industry entrepreneurs, and renowned science diplomacy experts from around the world. The program also offers a variety of interactive and applied learning opportunities, including case studies, group discussions and simulation exercises that replicate real-world scenarios.

Applying to the program is free of charge. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until April 21, 2025. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified of the results within ten (10) days.

What Is Included in Science Policy and Diplomatic Practice Certificate Program?

The Certificate program includes three fully online modules:

Module 1: Science Policy and Diplomacy

This module delves into the intersection of scientific advancement and policymaking, emphasizing the critical need for experts who can effectively bridge these domains. The course explores the evolution of science policy, the role of ethics in science and diplomacy, and diplomacy in areas such as global health, engineering, cyberspace, artificial intelligence, hydrologic and ocean science, climate change, space science, food security and more. 

Module 2: Mediation and Conflict Resolution

Mediation is equally applicable for managing disagreements within teams and between nations, and it is essential for managing the often-challenging relationships within and between states. The learning objective for this course centers around strategies and skills needed to effectively negotiate in international settings. Course topics include conflict analysis, effective mediation strategies, mediation skills in a multicultural setting and potential challenges to mediation.

Module 3: Diplomatic Communication

Diplomacy can be described as "the communication system of international society." This course explores oral and written communication to integrate verbal and non-verbal codes and intercultural subtleties into the diplomatic discourse. The course focuses on the standardized and technical vocabulary, as well as the required norms to achieve these goals. By the end of the module, participants will have acquired the tools to effectively interpret and convey scientific information to policymakers.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from the University of Arizona and UNITAR.
