New Portuguese Translation Certificate Coming Soon

We are excited to announce that a new certificate program will be launching soon: Portuguese/English Interpretation.

Modeled on our popular Spanish/English Translation Certificate, the fully online Portuguese/English Certificate program will include three courses: Medical, Legal and Business Translation.

The courses will provide:

  • Practice translating medical, legal, and business content from Portuguese to English and English to Portuguese
  • English/Portuguese health, legal and business terminology
  • Training in cultural competency
  • Preparation to work as a translator in health, legal and business settings

Dates and Schedule

The first course, Portuguese/English Medical Translation, will start September 2, 2025. Applications are scheduled to open in May, 2025.

Who Should Take the Portuguese/English Certificate Courses?

The program is designed for bilingual speakers with no formal training in translation who wish to improve or expand their written translation knowledge and skills. 

Applying to the Program

You will need to complete an application to be accepted into the program. The application will include a background information form and a written entrance exam to test proficiency in English and Portuguese. Applying will be free.

U of A and UNITAR Launch New Professional Certificate Program

As scientific advancements and global challenges are reshaping international relations, the capacity to bridge science and diplomacy has become paramount.

Recognizing this critical need, the University of Arizona is partnering with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) to offer an innovative new non-credit Professional Certificate in Science Policy and Diplomatic Practice.

The program combines the university’s leadership in scientific research with UNITAR’s six decades of expertise in diplomatic training, providing participants with a unique opportunity to integrate scientific advancements and challenges into global policymaking.

About the Science Policy and Diplomatic Practice Certificate Program

This 14-week non-credit certificate program equips professionals with skills in negotiation, strategic communication, critical thinking, and policy analysis. These competencies empower professionals to build partnerships, influence decision-making processes, and drive impactful solutions in diverse global contexts. 

This program is designed for

  • health professionals, scientists and engineers seeking to transition into the fields of policy and diplomacy
  • diplomats and policy-makers interested in addressing science-driven issues, such as climate change, agriculture, artificial intelligence, energy, space and health
  • early- to mid-career professionals who wish to enhance their skillsets in science and diplomacy

The curriculum begins with a core module on Science Policy and Diplomacy (SPD), developed and delivered by experienced science diplomats from the University of Arizona College of Engineering through the university’s SPD Initiative. This foundation is complemented by two specialized modules led by UNITAR: Mediation & Conflict Resolution, and Diplomatic Communication.

The program is fully online and includes both synchronous and asynchronous components. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from guest lecturers, including university professors, industry entrepreneurs, and renowned science diplomacy experts from around the world. The program also offers a variety of interactive and applied learning opportunities, including case studies, group discussions and simulation exercises that replicate real-world scenarios.

Upon completion, participants will earn a Professional Certificate jointly awarded by UNITAR and the University of Arizona, a prestigious credential designed to advance their careers and help them make a meaningful impact in global policymaking. 

Program Dates

The program dates are May 19-August 24, 2025. The application deadline is April 21, 2025.
