Scientific advancement and knowledge is at the forefront of a wide range of issues that will shape our futures. Climate change, artificial intelligence, space exploration, health care and pandemics all challenge policy makers to understand science, engineering and health questions.

However, the world lacks trained experts who can effectively straddle the policy and scientific domains.

We need scientists capable of interpreting and conveying scientific information to policy makers so they can make informed decisions, and we need policy-based individuals who effectively understand the strengths and weaknesses of scientific conclusions.

Learn to help bridge the gap between science and policy/diplomacy with this noncredit professional development course.

This course is unique to the University of Arizona and introduces the emerging field of science policy and diplomacy (SPD), with presentations from preeminent SPD leaders.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is for everyone! Participants with a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) background will learn the importance of understanding the implications of their work. Participants focused on government, policy, and social sciences will learn the importance of creating an awareness of scientific issues, goals and limitations.

International participants are encouraged! SPD is not limited to local, state and federal governments. Many science issues cross borders or affect our entire world.

What You Will Learn

You will explore topics such as the evolution of science policy, the role of ethics in science and engineering, science diplomacy, engineering diplomacy, science diplomacy in cyber space, artificial intelligence, conflict resolution, global health diplomacy, planning for a career in science policy, and more.

Lecturers include University Professors, entrepreneurs from industry, and renowned Science Diplomacy experts.

Class Schedule and Format

The course is grounded in lectures that provide historical perspectives and emphasize current and emerging Science Policy and Diplomacy issues.

This course is fully online and self-paced. The course includes approximately 30 hours of video lectures, with quizzes and other activities to support your learning.
