Weight Inclusive Health is a four-part non-credit certificate program that aims to provide healthcare providers with foundational knowledge of weight inclusive care.

Weight inclusive approaches use non-weight based markers for health promotion and are rooted in health equity.

The Certificate in Weight Inclusive Care offers four different courses that are meant to explore weight bias, weight inclusive frameworks, eating disorders, and counseling from a weight inclusive lens.

Who Should Take the University of Arizona Weight Inclusive Health Certificate Program?

This noncredit program is open to all. You do not need prior healthcare experience. This program is ideal for:

  • Recent college graduates
  • Healthcare professionals (1-5 years experience) looking to update their skill sets, including Dietitians, Physicians, Therapists, Pharmacists and Public Health professionals.
  • Those who are looking to make a shift into weight inclusive care or become more knowledgeable about other aspects of weight bias and eating disorder awareness.

What You Will Learn

  • Personal bias awareness and introspection about your relationship with food and bodies.
  • Addressing weight bias in health care by considering the social determinants of health, and practicing addressing and modifying weight-centric approaches.
  • Weight inclusive approaches to counseling using an overall trauma-informed approach; this includes how to start conversations, practice motivational interviewing, hold space for weight concerns, and the whole person.
  • Eating disorder and body image support with an intersectional lens and understanding of body autonomy.
  • Overall weight inclusive framework applications in practice, from counseling, to nutrition and healthcare visits.

Schedule and Format

The program is completely online and self-paced. You will have three weeks to complete each course.

You should expect to spend about five hours per week on course work, including watching videos, reading, participating in online discussions, completing assignments and taking quizzes.

Class Dates

You can take all four courses or choose to take only one or more individual courses. You may take the courses in any order.

Weight Inclusive Health Certificate Program Courses

This course will be exploring weight inclusive frameworks and how weight stigma impacts the health and nutrition of all types of people. Drawing on scientific research, participants will examine factors that influence how weight and health are perceived and how weight stigma impacts people across the lifecycle. It will introduce intuitive eating, as well as other weight inclusive approaches, as possible tools and can be adapted to support health promotion. There is great importance of including bias awareness and intersectionality, while challenging weight-centric approaches to health. The course will explore ways that non-diet approaches can be applied to medical nutrition therapy, counseling, nutrition coaching and how it can support one’s overall personal wellness in the healthcare system.

Weight Bias exists in healthcare settings and awareness of this fact helps one understand how that impacts people across the lifecycle, and how marginalized people are at higher risk for being weight stigmatized. This course reviews the various ways weight-centric care impacts how we provide healthcare and includes ways to identify and modify this factor and improve working in these settings as well as on an interdisciplinary team. It is important to use a weight inclusive lens when planning, developing, and disseminating health information to the public to avoid bias. This course also provides an in-depth and historical exploration of how society has shaped how we view bodies. Drawing on personal experiences and research, participants will explore how societal beauty ideals impact a person’s body image and health outcomes, reflect on their own experiences of having a body, and show how size-diversity can be a tool for advocacy.

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions. This course will provide a knowledge base and help participants develop skills in identifying the different types of eating disorders and associated comorbidities that may be encountered when working with diverse populations. Specific topics to be discussed include the differences between disordered eating and eating disorders, screening for eating disorders, and the importance of advocating for individuals to reduce the stigma of eating disorders and empower recovery. The course provides application practice in completing assessments for those with eating disorder diagnosis and identifying treatment frameworks used in recovery and prevention across the lifespan.

This course is designed to apply a weight inclusive lens to counseling using frameworks that foster body autonomy and that takes into consideration the lived experience of the client. The concepts in this course ultimately prepare us to counsel clients in a way that moves them towards body tolerance, acceptance, and liberation. Participants learn to use weight-inclusive and trauma-informed care as a foundational counseling approach. Specific counseling techniques will be used to address body image and weight concerns.

Courses

Each course is usually 16 weeks long and offered 1-2 times per year. Courses start in January, May and September.

Courses are self-paced, with weekly deadlines for activities such as reading, translation assignments and exams.

The focus of the Translation Certificate courses is not on theoretical content. These are skills-based courses, whose goal is to facilitate acquisition of translation competence, more specifically the transfer component of competence. Given the short duration of the program (each course is only 16 weeks), we focus on core skills, which require rich feedback (from instructors and peers) and guided practice.

Unlike transfer competence, content (terminology, field specific knowledge) can be learned independently and through intensive specialized webinars, widely available in the field. Certificate courses teach content and terminology in the context of translation tasks (rather than as separate discrete units) and aim to teach students how to identify and remedy knowledge gaps (something they will have to do throughout their careers as translators).

The Translation Certificate courses are practical, workshop-style courses, as indicated on the syllabus. The assignments provide opportunities to learn (with purposely selected texts and guided activities to help students learn translation skills). Exams do not test content, but skills and thus, no preparatory materials are needed. Students prepare for exams throughout the entire course (through guided practice and feedback).

Medical Translation

The Medical Spanish/English Translation course provides guided practice in the successful completion of professional translation tasks involving texts in the medical domain, such as health care forms, health information texts, health/patient education, and legal documents in the healthcare setting.

Dates: January 5-April 26, 2026

Legal Translation

Spanish/English Legal Translation provides guided practice in the successful completion of professional translation tasks involving texts common within the legal domain, such as legal forms and documents in the civil, commercial and criminal domain.

Dates: May 4-August 23, 2026

Business Translation

Spanish/English Business Translation provides guided practice in the successful completion of professional translation tasks involving texts in the business/financial domain. This course will be useful to those interested in pursuing translation careers in marketing, retail, banking, finance and other business areas.

Dates: September 2-December 21, 2025

For more training opportunities in translation and interpretation, please visit the University of Arizona National Center for Interpretation.

Building on the popular Paralegal Certificate program, the Advanced Paralegal Certificate provides an opportunity to deepen your knowledge of law and paralegal studies with classes in specialized facets of contemporary law.

Who Should Take Advanced Paralegal?

Advanced Paralegal is designed for those who have already completed a Paralegal Certificate or who have the equivalent knowledge and skills. If you have legal experience, but you have not completed a Paralegal Certificate program, you can review the Paralegal Certificate syllabus to determine whether you have the equivalent knowledge and skills.

The additional training gained through participation in these advanced classes will deepen your legal knowledge and skills, which in turn should increase your marketability.

Arizona does not have specific education requirements for Paralegals. Other Arizona legal occupations, such as Legal Document Preparer, do have specific education requirements. Completion of both the Paralegal Certificate (90 clock hours) and the Advanced Paralegal Certificate (270 clock hours) provides the equivalent of 24 semester hours of legal education. This may help you meet the Arizona education requirements for legal occupations that require 24 semester hours (or the clock hour equivalent) of legal education.

Completion of Paralegal and Advanced Paralegal also meets the education requirements set forth in California Business and Professions Code §6450 for California Paralegals.

What You Will Learn

Courses include: Advanced Legal Research, Alternative Dispute Resolution (Mediation), Bankruptcy Law, Business Law, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, e-Discovery, Estate Planning, Family Law, Real Property Law, Victim Advocacy and more.

Class Schedule and Format

This fully online noncredit professional development program includes 270 clock hours of training.

To complete the Advanced Paralegal Certificate, you will choose six courses from the list of 15+ Advanced Paralegal courses. Each course is offered in a seven-week online session (see session start dates in the right sidebar). You may take 1-3 topics per session, in any order.

There are weekly scheduled assignments for each course, but there are no scheduled class meeting times. You will communicate with your instructor and fellow Advanced Paralegal program participants via online discussion boards and email.

You should expect to spend at least 8-12 hours per week completing course work for each course. Course work may include reading, preparing written assignments, participating in online discussions, and taking quizzes or tests.

  • 270 clock hours of training
